St. Mary Magdalene Square

St. Mary Magdalene Square
"I believe that in architecture there must be something more
than one can see at first glance,
something that has to be discovered, and what we,
as observers, should find on several levels."

Saint  Mary Magdalene Square is a site located in the historical centre of Cracow, about ten minutes from the Main Square. Around the square there are many important monuments, including St. Peter and Pauls’ baroque church and St. Andrew’s romanesque church. Today’s Square of Saint Mary Magdalene is believed to have been the central square - and also the market place – of the former historic Okół, which was soon replaced by a church devoted to the Saint. The church was built in the XIII century. It was a  small single-nave church with a simple chancel. It was demolished in 1811.
Historical analysis:

Analysis of the existing state:
The main task of the project was to expose the square’s history. There was designed a modern reconstruction of the church. It is a light steel construction. The form is organic and symbolizes the spirit of the historical church, because the material reflects the surrounding buildings. It is built with special material and is installed with solar-panel generators. When the sun shines upon the panels music can be played within the Church. The flooring was also made by a special material. It heats during the day and returns warmth in the evening or night.

Inspirations:
The form of the building looks like something organic that has naturally grown in the area.  Inside the church there is a reduced floor. The level of the interior is lower than the outside in order to expose the relics of the historical walls. There is an educational zone with interactive exhibitions. Everything is adapted to the needs of people with disabilities. There is a platform for people in a wheelchair, subtitles in the Braile language and also a multimedia handset.
